Hi, my name is Clara Barton!
Adult Medium Female
Cocker Spaniel / Mixed
Clara Barton, a special name for a special pup. She’s a Cocker Spaniel, who is guessed to be about 5-7 years old. While she is a happy and beautiful girl, she has had an unimaginably hard past.
Before getting into her sad story, you need to hear how wonderful this amazing dog is! She is affectionate and sweet, so grateful for her new beginning. She’s an easy-going gal who gets along with other dogs, cats and even a guinea pig! She currently lives with all of those critters, and gets along with them wonderfully. (She also doesn't mind her foster brother loving on her and cleaning her face!) When she’s out for walks, she’s friendly towards other people and dogs she meets as well. This well-mannered girl is housebroken, and loves to lounge on the couch and in bed with her human…eventually falling asleep (and most likely snoring adorably with her tongue out.) She also rocks a mean mohawk!
So, how did Clara B come to be rescued by Dallas Pets Alive? She showed up as a stray at the Dallas shelter, and had clearly been dumped after years of neglect. First, she was found covered in matted fur – so much that 3 pounds of fur had to be shaved off. She also had a giant mammary tumor, pneumonia, anemia and heartworm. Her fate seemed grim, but the amazing vet staff tended to her needs and was able to remove her softball-sized tumor and treat her anemia and pneumonia. While Clara felt a million times better after having the tumor removed, the mass was found to be an adenocarcinoma. This is a malignancy that has a high chance of recurring or spreading. While this sounds awful, Clara is the happiest dog you’d ever meet! She is loyal and sweet with her nubby little tail always wagging! She's also eating well, putting on weight and is active and seemingly healthy. She loves being able to lie belly up now that that nasty thing is gone!
Clara B would need an extra special home to adopt her. She has a beautiful soul and is so easy to love, but would need a family willing to accept the responsibility of a possible recurrence of cancer. Clara’s future may be unknown, but her love and loyalty is certain. Once you meet her and see how special she is, you will fall in love. For now her health is good. She will go back to the vet in April for a chest x-ray and check up to see if the cancer has spread. She's taking a monthly heartworm preventative to keep her heartworm from getting worse, and over time it could eventually go away completely with monthly prevention!
Clara B would love to find a wonderful fur-ever family to live out the rest of her days with – however long that may be! She’s loved and happy now – and that’s all she could ask for! If you want open your heart and home up to this angel, or just want to meet this special girl, then apply to adopt Clara Barton today!
