Maverick

Maverick, the 12-year-old retriever mix formerly known as Bert, is back from the brink and resting comfortably in his new forever home.

Found in wandering the community late August, Maverick was severely underweight, had a slow gait, and was rapidly deteriorating. He was suffering from a whole host of medical complications: heartworms, upper respiratory infection, arthritis, fleas and ticks, multiple infections, and dental disease. A routine x-ray also revealed the unimaginable, 3 bullets.

Dallas Pets Alive! volunteers quickly arranged for his medical care, set up a fundraising campaign for his treatments, and found a loving foster home where he could recuperate.

A light that had almost been snuffed out began to burn bright once more, and within a month, the foster family felt like Maverick was a whole new dog.

“We have another dog, an eight-year-old lab, who he’s best friends with. He loves snuggles. He loves following you around. He loves just being around his people.”

Less than two months from the day he was found, DPA matched Maverick with his forever home. His family had been searching for a rescue dog. They had children, other dogs, and a little more love to give. Although the foster family and volunteers were sad to say goodbye to such a sweet soul, they were overjoyed to watch him blossom under their care, thrive with his new pack, and get the life he always deserved.

Maverick’s story is just one of many happy endings facilitated by DPA volunteers, underscoring the importance of foster families and adoption. To learn more, check out our Adoptable Pets, contact adopt@dallaspetsalive.org, or visit our Adoption Process page.
