DPA’s Pawsome People: February 2019 Volunteer Spotlight

DPA’s Pawsome People: February 2019 Volunteer Spotlight

“I have been working with Courtney on the Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) team for almost a year. She volunteers at Dallas Animal Shelter (DAS), working to prevent shelter surrenders. She is always reliable, volunteers regularly, and has such a positive outlook on an often challenging volunteer role. Courtney is also an awesome foster mama for DPA. Courtney recently stepped into a larger volunteer role partnering with the Rescue Team. In this role she gathers information on animals surrendered through PASS, and quickly shares their information to the Dogs in Need album for our foster network. Unlike strays, owner surrenders have no hold period at the shelter, therefore this role is important for getting information out on surrendered animals to our network as quick as possible so that our DPA fosters can help save more lives. Courtney, thank you so much for all you do for DPA – we appreciate your life saving work and we are so glad to have you on the team!!” -Andra Adams, DPA!’s PASS Director What is your current role? PASS Liaison, Foster Mom, and PASS onsite volunteer How did you get involved with volunteering at DPA? My friends Alyssa and Caroline have been involved for awhile. I saw Alyssa foster a fearful dog and within a month she was a whole new dog. I wanted to be a part of that change for other animals. What are you most passionate about at DPA? I have a special place for scared and shut down animals. With a little love and stability, their transformations have been amazing! Many of those dogs don’t “show well”...
A Letter from DPA’s Board of Directors

A Letter from DPA’s Board of Directors

Dear Friends of DPA: Dallas Pets Alive! has grown tremendously over the past 6 years. We have focused on approaching animal rescue through innovative programming, shifting the way our community views animal rescue, and working toward making Dallas a No-Kill city. The Board has focused on growing DPA and establishing our organization as a top-tier animal rescue and outstanding non-profit in Dallas. We are working hard to find the best space possible for our new adoption center, which will elevate and facilitate pet adoption in the DFW area. As we continue growing and enhancing our existing programs, we must ensure our adoptable pets get the exposure they need while also building and sustaining a solid business infrastructure. Because of our progress and goal to be a leading animal welfare non-profit, the Board of Directors is reinforcing its commitment to DPA by creating the first full-time staff position. We are thrilled to announce Leslie Sans will continue her role as Executive Director in a full-time capacity, where she will continue working to build an even stronger Dallas Pets Alive! through increased community awareness, networking and fundraising. Sincerely, Dallas Pets Alive Board of Directors Brittani Lassiter Rory O’Loughlin Cherie Batsel Candice Aaron Amy Baldwin Peter Baldwin Carla Eboli Drew Lassiter Steve Mastor Lindsey Reedy Adam...

New PASS Program to Help Reduce Owner Surrenders at Dallas Animal Services

New PASS Program to Help Reduce Owner Surrenders at Dallas Animal Services

Spot’s human parents loved him the moment they laid eyes on him, but they found out quickly that raising a puppy is hard work! They tried and tried to work with Spot on the chewing and the barking and the nipping. They looked into professional training, but it was not an option they could afford. Soon, they were so frustrated and saw no other option but to take him to the shelter. They thought, Maybe we were not cut out to be pet owners and Spot deserves better than we can give him. Situations like Spot’s happen all the time. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a program that could help Spot’s family get him the training he needs at a low cost, so they don’t feel like they need to return him to the shelter, where there’s a risk that Spot might get euthanized? Come December 2016, there will be such a program in Dallas! Dallas Pets Alive!, since its inception, has focused on reactive rescue, pulling animals from Dallas Animal Services (DAS) into our adoption program. This year and into 2017 our goal is not only to continue our good work rescuing animals from the shelter but also to take a more proactive approach. A major component of this approach is helping owners who are having problems so great that they see surrendering their pet(s) to a shelter as their only option. Helping these owners is the basis of the Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program, which will launch on December 3, 2016 thanks to the support of The Dallas Foundation’s grant program. The new...
