Honor for Hero’s Heart

If you cross paths with a heartworm poster at a vet’s office you’ll know that you would do anything to avoid this pain for your pet. A heartworm is a roundworm that can grow to be twelve inches long that lives in your pet’s heart and can cause fatal side effects, even after they are removed. Heartworms are spread through a mosquito bite and if left untreated the heartworms can accumulate into the hundreds inside a pet’s body. Every state in the US has mosquitoes therefore every pet is at risk.
DPA!’s Pawsome Person: March Volunteer Spotlight

Amy is quickly approaching her 1 year anniversary with DPA and in her time has made a huge impact on the Medical Team! She has been a consistent and reliable driving force in ensuring our animals are seen by vets in a timely manner and receive the specific medical care they need. Amy is an Appointment Authorization Admin for our Medical Team and we could not be more thankful for her fast turn around time, friendly and professional demeanor, and thirst for knowledge and understanding of both the inner-workings of DPA and veterinary procedures. Amy has become a key Medical Team volunteer and is someone both the Medical Coordinators and the fosters have learned they can depend on to get approval forms regularly completed in a timely manner. With roughly 300 animals in foster care at any given time, this is no easy task, but Amy never fails to get the job done! DPA and our fosters are so lucky to have Amy here to help with getting the animals feeling healthy and adoption ready as quickly as possible.
DPA!’s Pawsome Person: March Foster Spotlight

When Danielle began fostering with us a little under a year ago, she dove in head first. Her first foster, Will, became a DPA favorite largely because of the amount of time and effort Danielle put into making him the best pup for his FURever. Danielle keeps up to date with marketing material – she doesn’t shy away from dressing up her fosters for holiday promos, uses her own network to spread the word about her fosters, and even created an instagram for them!
DPA!’s Cat of the Month – March: Meet Sharky!

She’s too friendly to live in a barn, loves to cuddle with people and has plans to be the only cat in her next household. Meet Sharky! This pretty cat is a Torbie, a mix between a tortoiseshell and a tabby. Her brown and gray markings, stripes and golden eyes make her quite the attractive feline.
DPA!’s Dog of the Month – March: Meet Freckles!

Meet Freckles! He’s a fan of kind people, big trucks, car rides, squirrels and family life. And he’s looking for a permanent home.
Leadership Spotlight: Dena, DPA!’s Alumni Director

Our responsibility for the pets adopted through Dallas Pets Alive! does not end at adoption. Alumni Director Dena Friend and her team help to ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of our adopted dogs and cats are maintained after they have moved out of our program and into their forever homes.
New Product Review: Open Nature Grain-Free Pet Food

We got to sample both wet and dry dog and cat food, with flavors ranging from Chicken and Brown Rice dry dog food to chicken and whitefish wet cat food.
2018 – The Year of the Dog and What that Means for You!

If you were waiting for a sign to adopt a dog, this is your sign for the next year. Starting February 16th, 2018 we will be in the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese zodiac calendar. In the Chinese calendar every year is represented by one of twelve zodiac animals in a twelve month cycle. Each twelve year cycle is designated with an element rotating between metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. This year, 2018, is represented by an Earth Dog. The last occurrence of a Dog was in 2006, and the last Earth Dog was in 1958! This means that anyone born during this year will inherit the Earth Dog characteristics of being communicative, serious, and responsible – much like famous celebrities, Madonna and Michael Jackson, who were both born as Earth Dogs!
Ruff Valentine’s Day? Adopt from DPA!

Dating can be rough. You first have to find a person that has shared interests with you. Then, you have to choose which interest to explore on a date, i.e., food, movies, museums, workouts, etc. Once you’ve selected one thing to move forward with for approximately 2-3 hours, then you have to think about discussion topics! What if you don’t agree with most of what the other person is saying? At that point it would be nice to leave and “go fetch” the safe, warm comforts of your home. Why do we put ourselves through all of this when you already have a readily available date waiting for you when you walk through your door? This individual loves what you love, is always up for a spontaneous adventure, and is excited to be with you all of the time, no matter what you are wearing. This ideal match is known as – your dog!
