Meet Leo XIII (New Digs)!

Leo’s story begins in a heartbreaking place. Found nearly two years ago in the country, he was just a tiny, scruffy ball of fur sitting off to the side with dried tears in his eyes, looking completely defeated. His previous owners admitted he was often bullied by their larger dogs, and it showed — he was underfed and terrified of simple things like walking through doors or being near a broom. When he was rescued, his coat was so dirty and matted that he looked dark gray-black; it wasn’t until several baths later that his true golden-yellow color was revealed. It was clear he had endured neglect and mistreatment, and he desperately needed a second chance.

With patience and love, Leo has slowly learned that people can be kind. Though he still startles at times, he has blossomed into one of the sweetest, most affectionate companions you could hope to meet. Neutered, microchipped, and fully up to date on vaccines, Leo is ready to leave his painful past behind and find a forever home filled with gentleness, safety, and love. Although his exact breed is unknown, he most closely resembles a Kokoni.

Leo is happiest when he’s around affectionate humans as he’s incredibly affectionate as well. He’s the kind of dog who will curl up on your lap to take a nap or stretch out beside you while you relax. He loves spending time outdoors, whether that’s soaking up the sun in the grass or going for a stroll. He walks politely on leash, knows simple commands like “sit” and “come here,” and is completely house trained. Leo does very well with cats and has a calm temperament around most dogs, though he can sometimes become very afraid. Because of his past experiences, dogs can intimidate him. Leo is not a fit for a home with young children, but he thrives around adults who are gentle and understanding.

Leo is crate-free but has his own bed and blanket where he happily settles when asked. He would love a home with a yard or an owner who enjoys regular walks, as outdoor time is one of his favorite things. His ideal adopter will be someone who values cuddle time as much as playtime and who can offer him the calm, loving environment he deserves.

Rehoming is through no fault of Leo’s — we are welcoming a young child into our home, and it isn’t the right fit for him. Leo is an incredibly sweet, affectionate companion looking for someone who will treasure his gentle soul. Apply to adopt Leo XIII today!
