DPA’s Pawsome People: May 2019 Foster Spotlight

“Ah, a woman of many hats, Kristin! Kristin began fostering with us exactly a year ago and originally wanted to start out as just temp fostering to get her feet wet. A week later she jumped in the deep end and began fostering her first DPA! foster, Phoebe!

Since then, she has successfully found three pups their forever homes and is on her fourth foster, Violet! When Kristin’s house is full- she still finds so many ways to help. You can always count on her to offer up doggy “Uber” services for anyone in need, support and friendship to new fosters, and she even recently joined our transport team to help get dogs up north! Her passion and dedication for saving them all shines through in every conversation with her. It has been so fun to watch her growth and journey. We are so lucky to have her with DPA!” -Danica B. How did you get involved with Fostering with DPA?

I saw an urgent foster plea on Instagram. After quickly learning the statistics of the pet overpopulation in Dallas, I knew we had to help! My husband Jay and I have steadily fostered for over a year now and it’s been such a rewarding experience.

Tell us about a few of your fosters.

Currently, we have two fosters! Violet is a sweet, smart, squishy puppy with LOTS of personality! And Keeva is a sweet senior German Shepherd that will be heading up north to one of our rescue partners in NY in a month or so.

What is your favorite animal adoption story?

That would be Dottie! She was our longest foster. She had been a stray puppy before she got to the shelter, and we soon learned her leg had been injured. She had amputation surgery, and while most amputations go well and the recovery time is quick, we learned Dottie had some congenital issues that caused problems in her other leg. She needed many weeks of physical therapy and must do special exercises for the rest of her life to keep her legs strong. After nearly 9 months in our care, she found her perfect family, complete with a furry sister that she adores. I cried happy tears that day!

What do you love most about fostering with Dallas Pets Alive?

DPA has so many avenues of support in place! If you need to go out of town, there are temporary fosters that will step up to keep your foster pet while you are gone. If your foster pup has behavioral issues, the Support Squad is there with advice. If you can’t make it to a vet appointment, there are people that will help transport. You’re always covered!

What would be some words of wisdom to new DPA Fosters?

The comment I get the most from people when they hear I foster dogs is, “I couldn’t do that; I would want to keep them all!” Don’t let that keep you from fostering! We all grow attached to our fosters and love them like our own. I’ve discovered that I would much rather be sad to see them go in exchange for them to survive the shelter and find their perfect “happily ever after.”

Give us a fun fact about you!

A relative of mine started a very big oil company years ago. I haven’t seen a penny of that and likely never will. But if I did, I would buy a huge piece of land for all the pups to help make the US a no-kill country!
