DPA’s Cat of the Month – May: Meet RAFIKI

DPA’s Cat of the Month – May: Meet RAFIKI

RAFIKI, the prophetic character from The Lion King movie who heals wounds and gives sage advice to adventurous cats, might look at his DPA namesake and smile knowingly.  He would certainly want to find this kitten a home where he could grow into his destiny. While it’s clear to us at DPA that our young Domestic Shorthair/Red Tabby Mix has come through some heroic battles, as we look into the future, we see a loving permanent home for a very cute kitty!     Meet RAFIKI, our May 2108 Cat of the Month!  A feral kitten who survived life-threatening health issues, he is described as being very social with other animals, a vocalizer who isn’t shy about meowing until he gets some loving touch and chock-full of playful energy.  If you can spend some timing providing belly rubs and standing watch over some kitten antics (that 8-hour stay in the air vent was just a blip on the radar screen) you may want to apply to be RAFIKI’s guardian and friend.   RAFIKI is box-trained, gentle (no hissing, biting or scratching) and is an easy-going sort about his cat food.  He will be eager to jump onto the sofa or bed with you and follow you around the house for some much-deserved affection.  Because he had a rough start in life, he would do well in a patient, quiet, adult household with people who have a lot of love to share. It might take a little time for him to warm up to you, but he will be a loyal companion once he does. We predict he would be...
DPA’s Dog of the Month – May: Meet Harrison Ford!

DPA’s Dog of the Month – May: Meet Harrison Ford!

Quick!  Before the suspension bridge breaks, meet Harrison Ford!  Harrison is this month’s leading man, a ruggedly handsome sort with an expressive face who’s bound to entertain you with his canine adventures.  Harrison is large Labrador Retriever mix with a brindle gray and white coat and a winsome smile who is ready for a new script.   As expected, Harrison has had his share of mishaps.  Whatever happened, he isn’t telling us, but he came to DPA malnourished and missing most of his fur.  That must have been some Temple of Doom! This courageous pup is in a safe place now, has put the long, hard journey behind him and is ready for a new home.  True to his on-screen personality, he falls in love easily and will become your constant companion, laying in your lap (well, part of him anyway) or next to you on the sofa or bed.     Harrison loves adventure so he wants to play a lot.  And he wants you to play, too. He would also benefit from a secure yard and daily walks with his family.  Being a younger dog, obedience and behavior classes would help him gain social skills and confidence for the journey ahead.   Of course, Harrison has a gentlemanly side.  He can walk on a leash, is crate-trained and housebroken.  He prefers to parachute out of a plane over the Himalayas with a female dog about his size and energy level.  Cats and male dogs shouldn’t be on this adventure.   Harrison Ford has so much to offer!  Can you see this special dog having a leading role...
DPA’s Dog of the Month – April: Meet Gemmy!

DPA’s Dog of the Month – April: Meet Gemmy!

You: An open-hearted, patient dog-lover who has time for doggie parks, defines yourself as a morning person and seeks true companionship.  Her: A loyal, curious, gentle and social canine topped off with a fun, quirky sense of style looking for a forever home. Meet Gemmy, a six-year-old, female American Staffordshire Terrier/Lab mix!   Gemmy has a reddish-brown coat with a white bib and paws and a fashion sense that extends to red bandanas, pink shirts and aviator glasses:)  Gemmy was surrendered by her owner and living at the Dallas shelter when Dallas Pets Alive found her and placed her into a loving foster home.  And now it’s time to find her a forever home. You should be aware that Gemmy loves mornings.  She wakes up ready to take on the world with enthusiasm and energy, bringing life to her sleepy household.  She also has the unusual habit of falling asleep sitting up! (Maybe because she used up all her energy in the morning?)  Whoever adopts her should enjoy laughing at her antics and be willing to socialize with many other dogs and their owners at doggie daycare and dog parks where Gemmy loves to endlessly wrestle and chase other pups.   Gemmy needs someone patient to help her trust people, especially men and strangers, and to feel comfortable walking on a leash.  Her ideal home would be one with another dog or two for playmates. (Gemmy prefers that no cats are living with her.) Her foster says she will be a wonderful, loyal companion if given some time to adjust to people.  If Gemmy is your idea of the perfect...
DPA’s Cats of the Month – April: Meet Betty & Veronica!

DPA’s Cats of the Month – April: Meet Betty & Veronica!

Here are two very cute feline sisters who have different temperaments but a special bond and want to be adopted together. Meet Betty and Veronica!   Betty is a Domestic ShortHair/Tabby/Mixed with pretty round green eyes and a fluffy tail who is described as a ham who chases anything that moves.  Veronica, on the other hand, is a Domestic Shorthair/Mixed with faint tabby markings and blue eyes the color of a summer sky who just wants to serenely chill out and share her days with Betty.  Betty and Veronica have been together for ten years. (Yeah, that sister bond is strong and to hear they will stay together would be music to our ears.) Different, but inseparable. Both these kitties came from a hoarding situation where, although they bonded well to each other, never had a chance to bond to people.  In spite of that, they have come a long way and love to be petted and sleep next to their foster mom who thinks that even though they may never be lap cats, they can be excellent companion animals if just given time to adjust.   Betty and Veronica will need a stable home with a family that can show them a lot of love and patience.  Could you be the new home to provide shelter and care for these two deserving cats? If you think these two could be a part of your family, apply to adopt them today! Now through April 30 their adoption fees are 50%...
DPA’s Cat of the Month – March: Meet Sharky!

DPA’s Cat of the Month – March: Meet Sharky!

She’s too friendly to live in a barn, loves to cuddle with people and has plans to be the only cat in her next household.  Meet Sharky! This pretty cat is a Torbie, a mix between a tortoiseshell and a tabby. Her brown and gray markings, stripes and golden eyes make her quite the attractive feline. Sharky was a stray when DPA first met her.  She was a part of a spay/neuter program and was destined to be in a barn cat program, spending her days wandering outside, making a barn her home and catching mice for farmers.  But then her true nature came to the surface when she got attached to her caretakers and it was clear that she was meant to be a lap cat who is better suited to the farmhouse than the barn! Sharky’s foster mom loves her affectionate ways.  Sharky likes to sit with her on the sofa and even puts her paw over her foster mom’s leg.  (You aren’t going anywhere, okay?) Her favorite activity is purring (she’s very good at it) and she loves to talk to you at meal times. Sharky can be a bit nervous and needs a confident handler who will help her build trust in people. She would make a great companion for someone who could spend a lot of time with her and make her the one and only feline of the house.  She is box-trained and uses a scratching post, too. If you think you could give this special indoor kitty a new home, apply to adopt her today! Now through March 31 her adoption fee...
