Meet Esmeralda (New Digs)!

Meet Esmeralda, also known as Esme, with the most gorgeous eyes! She is a 10-year-old, 9-pound Domestic Shorthair. My soon-to-be ex-wife adopted her in 2020 before we were married in 2022. She is named after the character Esmeralda from the Disney movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” because of her eyes. She was pretty scrawny and skittish when my wife first got her. So much so the foster thought she was just 2 years old. But in 2021, she had a tooth extraction, and an x-ray revealed she was closer to 6 years old.

She has become a very affectionate lap cat who loves having her head rubbed. In 2023, our baby daughter was born. Esme got along with her but I think Esme is better suited for older children who know how to pet a cat properly. Esme can still be skittish when a lot of people are in the house and may hide in a room or under a bed. She loves to climb up to high spaces like on top of bookshelves. She does not scratch furniture but you will need a tall scratch post that lets her fully stretch out when scratching.

She is an indoor cat but does get curious about the outside so she loves to sit next to a window and watch the birds. Esme does not like other cats, but I don’t know how she will react to dogs. She will play and likes feather-on-string stick toys. She also has this thing for long objects like pens where she would shove them under rugs. I’ve seen her running around entertaining herself with some of my daughter’s toys as well. But as she has gotten older she seems more content to just lay around and cuddle. She is very affectionate if you are the right person. I have noticed that she chooses the people she likes so we will have to see if she is a good fit.

The reason I am giving her up is because she was my wife’s cat before marriage and my wife abruptly left with my child and did not even bother to take the cat with her. I was not given a choice. As much as I love Esme, I need to focus on the divorce and custody and rebuilding my life. My wife’s lawyer is allowing me to rehome Esme and I want to find a good home for her.
