Meet our sweet and tender Rocket. He’s an 8 year old, 47 lb white parti poodle with red markings. We’ve had him in our care for two years. Prior to that, he was allegedly kept in a barn and left to roam the owners’ pasture in his last month. Neglect was evident by the fleas, multiple infections, and several inches of matted hair he sustained during his time there. He is now in great health, up to date on his vaccinations, and has been neutered.
Rocket is overall pretty low energy–he enjoys a shady patch of grass and cuddling with his stuffed pink platypus in his crate. He adores walks and does well on a leash with very little to no pulling. He lives with a female standard poodle, an older male chiweenie, and occasionally hangs out with an outdoor cat. Rocket tends to be more submissive; our chiweenie’s attitude usually puts him on edge and exacerbates nervous habits. We think he’d do best in a home with only female dogs or non territorial/resource guards.
Although shy and anxious, Rocket is incredibly gentle when he interacts with humans and has no bite history. He is not cuddly but will approach softly for love and scritches as trust builds. He has never jumped up on people or furniture. He is a nervous marker, but this has improved over time, especially after separating him from our chiweenie; we typically still keep him belly-banded when we anticipate company or changes in environment. He is very treat motivated–apart from plopping down to sit if he sees a bag of treats, he’ll typically walk right up to be diapered when he hears the velcro. We think he could learn additional commands with more consistency. Someone with a routine work schedule, work from home, or retired would be ideal.
It’s been incredibly rewarding working with Rocket and witnessing his precious, gentle personality grow in confidence. We are moving to be closer to family and will be staying with them during this process. Unfortunately we will not be able to bring our sweet boy with us and are hoping to find him a new home to fall in love with him.
