New PASS Program to Help Reduce Owner Surrenders at Dallas Animal Services

New PASS Program to Help Reduce Owner Surrenders at Dallas Animal Services

Spot’s human parents loved him the moment they laid eyes on him, but they found out quickly that raising a puppy is hard work! They tried and tried to work with Spot on the chewing and the barking and the nipping. They looked into professional training, but it was not an option they could afford. Soon, they were so frustrated and saw no other option but to take him to the shelter. They thought, Maybe we were not cut out to be pet owners and Spot deserves better than we can give him. Situations like Spot’s happen all the time. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a program that could help Spot’s family get him the training he needs at a low cost, so they don’t feel like they need to return him to the shelter, where there’s a risk that Spot might get euthanized? Come December 2016, there will be such a program in Dallas! Dallas Pets Alive!, since its inception, has focused on reactive rescue, pulling animals from Dallas Animal Services (DAS) into our adoption program. This year and into 2017 our goal is not only to continue our good work rescuing animals from the shelter but also to take a more proactive approach. A major component of this approach is helping owners who are having problems so great that they see surrendering their pet(s) to a shelter as their only option. Helping these owners is the basis of the Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program, which will launch on December 3, 2016 thanks to the support of The Dallas Foundation’s grant program. The new...

The #MyMartha Campaign

The #MyMartha Campaign

Our talented friends at the Dieste, Inc. agency (three-time Ad Age Multicultural Agency of the Year, by the way) launched a new pro-bono program for DPA this week. Remember the crazy-cool Mutt-bombing campaign? And #AdoptableTrends, they did that one, too. The #MyMartha initiative invites people to share memories of the pet who changed their lives – the same way a pup named Martha once changed the life of a Beatle – and inspire others to adopt a homeless pet of their own. See what it’s about at mymartha.pet and tell us how your pet changed you, with the hashtag ‪#‎MyMartha on your Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. SHARE YOUR STORY and SPREAD THE WORD. Rescue pets change lives, and there are millions waiting for a human best friend to find them and take them home. #MyMartha   We thank the staff of Dieste for their creativity, expertise, love and their valuable time in helping us save the lives of more companion animals in our...

This is Emmitt.

This is Emmitt.

This is Emmitt, Emmitt Smith. He’s a youngish, black and white lab mix with his own gorgeous eye mask who’s in the market for a forever home of his own. We thought we’d found that home for him – not once, but three times – and through no fault of his own, it didn’t work out.  He didn’t bite anyone, set the house on fire or steal the family car. One adoptive home decided they weren’t ready to be pet parents after all, time-commitment-wise. Another thought he wasn’t gentile enough for their well-decorated home. Each time he’s come back to a DPA foster home and patiently waited, happily re-adjusting when we’ve asked him to. Emmitt has a lot going for him, too. He’s a sweetie: the ultimate teddy bear who wants to cuddle and get his belly rubbed all day. Plus he’s house-trained, walks well on a leash and knows the basics for canine manners. He gets along with people and dogs of all shapes and sizes, and even cats! In fact, he’d be good a good fit for most any type of household, because he’s so laid back and gentle. Plenty of dogs have a tough time finding the right fit – dogs just like him who aren’t bad or mean or destructive, they just haven’t found their forever human family. But when they do it’s the BEST! If you want to see a veteran animal rescuer cry like a baby, tell them how a wonderful, patient, sweet pet who’d waited and waited for a “FURever” finally got one. We’ve seen it happen plenty of times, so we know it will...
