DPA’s Pawesome Person Spotlight: August Volunteer Spotlight

“Caitlin joined our Adoptions Team when we were beginning our cat adoption program. She became an essential part of building the cat adoption side of that team and worked closely with our Adoption Director, TNR Director, and Foster/Medical Director in order to put our current policies and procedures in place to have the best outcome for our cats and kittens. Caitlin has a passion and the customer service skills needed to work closely with adopters and fosters to achieve the best match making possible in pairing adopters with their purrfect furever feline. Caitlin assisted in pioneering unknown territory for DPA and I know for a fact without her involvement this side of our program would have struggled to grow the way it has been able to over the past year. Thanks to Caitlin’s hard work and dedication we were able to assist our TNR program in rehoming cats and kittens that were adoptable and not eligible for release, while also enabling our cat program to take off after years of trying. Caitlin is part of the reason we were finally able to become Dallas PETS Alive!” – Stefanie Steiner, Foster Director for Dallas Pets Alive! This is why Caitlin is our Pawesome Person Spotlight for August! What is your current role? I am the original Cat Adoption Counselor! I review and vet adoption applications, counsel potential adopters, and finalize adoptions. How did you get involved with volunteering at DPA? In early 2016, a good friend of mine, Maris Kastanos, volunteers for DPA and she let me know that they were working to get the cat program up and running,...

DPA’s Pawesome Person: May Foster Spotlight

“Debbie has saved many lives by fostering dogs over the last few years with DPA! She is always willing to step up and foster dogs at risk of euthanasia… the dogs who literally have hours left to live, and no matter if the timing is right or wrong, Debbie always says yes and finds a way to make it work. She has fostered a few heartworm positive dogs too, which is a bit of a longer commitment because treatment lasts at least a few months. Debbie has such a big heart for bully breeds, which have a harder time getting adopted due to misconceptions and unfair reputations. She has worked with dogs with various behavioral and medical needs, and has always committed to fostering a dog until it is adopted, no matter how long it takes. In fact, she is currently fostering our Dog of the Month, Zephyr, who has been searching for her forever home for a full year, and Suzy, who has been on the hunt for a family for 7 months! These two dogs are fabulous, dog friendly, happy girls, but for some reason they just haven’t found their perfect match. Debbie has never complained about the length of time a dog spends at her home, but continues to love them and care for them no matter what! She is in it for the long haul, and we so appreciate her commitment to helping our pups who need it most!” says Allison Brandon, Foster and Medical Director for Dallas Pets Alive! This is why Debbie Binion is one of Dallas Pet’s Alive’s PAWesome People! How did...

“Shelbye is the breath of fresh air I needed for the PASS program. She volunteered and worked while in college at Texas A&M with animals, so her backgroud peeked my interest in her immediately, but her passion for saving animals really made me want her on the team. PASS is a program that is so new and complex, that its hard for some to conceptualize but Shelbye just got it and she has ran with it ever since. Her organization and compassion for people and their pets is exactly what I needed in this role. The PASS line can be hard to volunteer for, there are very few solutions out there to help people and their pets but Shelbye always takes the opportunity to make individual email responses to people, people she will never see. Her customer service to citizens in need and her organization have taken the PASS line, to where it should be. I am so happy to have her on the PASS team!” – Leslie Sans, Executive Director of Dallas Pets Alive! What is your current role? I am the Assistant Director of DPA’s (somewhat new) Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program, and I also foster. How did you get involved with volunteering at DPA? I had a lot of free time when I moved back to this area last summer. One of my close friends, Lizzie, has been a DPA volunteer for the past 2 years and loves rescue just as much as I do. She forwarded me a list of DPA’s volunteer opportunities; I took one look at that list and honestly have...

Sally’s Fund: Help Dallas Pets Alive! Raise $20,000

Dallas Pets Alive! has seen an unprecedented increase in our rescue numbers each month so far in 2017. For example, our total intake for March was 136 animals, which is 143% up year over year. Currently, we have the most animals in foster care than we have ever had before – 254 pets are in foster homes right now! With our ability to save more lives, we have seen a major increase in our major medical care costs. In March alone, we spent over $20,000 on canine non-basic medical care. Many of our dogs have required hospitalization and blood transfusions and are battling parvo and mange on top of that. When it rains, it pours, but these are steps we must take in order to continue to save lives. DPA doesn’t shy away from the hard cases, which is why we need your support. We need your help! This is a call to action to donate today to help us save more animals like our puppies fighting Parvo. In the last few weeks, DPA has had multiple litters of puppies break with parvovirus, which is an often fatal disease for undervaccinated puppies. Our Super Hero pups – DEADPOOL, WONDER, LEIA, and KONG – have required blood transfusions and hospitalizations in order to beat parvo, and since their immune systems are already compromised by mange, it has been a tough road for them. They were appropriately named though, and we know they will keep fighting with your help! Make your donation go further! A wonderful donor has committed $5,000 in matching funds if we can raise $5,000 by May 15....
